Before I brought it to the Genius Bar, I decided to call AppleCare and see if there was a simple fix for it. The AppleCare dude basically said it’s a hardware problem, and it seems to be a problem with the fan, which is throwing off the graphics card, and also making the computer run really hot. Now, I did replace the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card last year when it failed on me, and that repair costed $1250 + labor. Since Apple admitted that the card was a faulty card, the repair costs were paid for. The AppleCare dude said that they should have installed different graphics card, so I don’t run into anymore issues. That call went well, so I decided to visit the Genius Bar.

I had a 4:30 appointment; I got there at about 4:15 and waited in the freaking cold room for a Genius to be available. So it’s my turn and I pull out my computer and start explaining the problem. The Genius (his name is Pete) runs a few checks on my computer and says they installed a revision of the 8600M GT on my computer last year. I told Pete about what AppleCare said about my problems, and he asked if I could replicate it on the spot. It doesn’t happen every single time so Pete took over my computer and apparently was trying to bog down my graphics card. And what applications did he decide to use? Terminal. Yeah, you know the program where you enter commands? Yeah that one. So I decide to help him out a little, and I open Photoshop and iTunes and a whole bunch of movies and videos. I couldn’t replicate the problem on the spot, so I showed him a video shot on my iPhone 4 showing the fan problem, and he’s like: “Yeah, must be a loose part inside or something like that.” So after showing my frustration with the computer, Pete says: “Yeah, we can send out your computer for a complete repair for JUST $310.” So he’s telling me that I’m going to pay $310 to replace my faulty graphics card with another 8600M GT that’s going to be messed up 6 months from now? No thanks, Apple.

And as I’m typing this, my iPhone is stuck in recovery mode because iTunes bricked it while updating to 4.0.1.
